In October 2006 I discovered richarddawkins.net and its wonderful forum. I contributed regularly and saw the number of posts grow from a few thousand to over 2 million. The forum was an opportunity for us to learn about each others experiences as atheists and in particular to support those who were being discriminated against, particularly in the US.
The addition of adding comments to the News and Articles section on the home page plus the forum meant that for several years richarddawkins.net was my first port of call every morning (followed closely by the NSS website).
The decision to change all this earlier this year was a tragic mistake. It has destroyed a vibrant online community only to be replaced by what is now simply the Richard Dawkins merchandising site.
My opinion of Richard has plummeted and I can only assume that he has been poorly advised. Perhaps he no longer takes an interest in the site as it is inconceivable that he would have carefully built an online community only to destroy it when it reached maturity. The forum and comments pages were why people came to it, not to buy DVDs and T-shirts.
